UGC-CBSE NET

UGC (University Grants Commission) is a statutory organisation, which was established by the Union government in 1956. Its main objective is to provide recognition to the Indian universities, and provide funds to such recognised universities and colleges. CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) now conducts this exam, on behalf of UGC for the post of Lecturer and for providing the JRF for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and in research. The exam is conducted in streams such as Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, etc.

What is UGC NET/JRF Exam?

Each year, twice UGC conducts the exams of JRF/NET. It’s an eligibility test for those who want to become

  1. Junior research fellows (= can do research with monthly stipend 25,000/- per month approx.)
  2. Assistant professors (=can do job with starting salary 76,000 per month approx.)
    1. however certain universities require both NET certificate as well as Ph.D completion for appointment)

Who can apply?

Those who completed or soon to complete Masters (Post graduation) with minimum:

  • 55% for unreserved category
  • 50% for SC, ST, OBC and PH

What’s new in 2018 ?

The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of only objective type questions and will be held on 08th July 2018 (Sunday) in two separate sessions as under: Session First (Paper-I): 100 Marks (50 out of which 50 questions all are compulsory) [Duration: 1 Hours (09.30 AM to 10.30 AM, IST)] Second (Paper-II): 200 Marks (100 questions all are compulsory) [Duration: 2 Hours (11.00 AM to 01.00 PM, IST)] Paper-I shall consist of 50 objective type compulsory questions each carrying 2 marks. The questions which will be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate Paper-II shall consist of 100 objective type compulsory questions each carrying 2 marks which will be based on the subject selected by the candidate. All the questions of Paper-II will be compulsory, covering entire syllabi of earlier Paper II & Paper-III (including all electives, without options). Candidate will have to mark the responses for questions of Paper-I & Paper-II on the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) Sheet provided along with the test booklet. Detailed instructions for filling up the OMR sheet are given on page 16 and 17. It may be noted that these instructions to candidates will not be sent to any of the candidate by post. The CBSE has also increased the upper age limit for appearing in NET JRF exam from the existing 28 years to 30 years. The relaxation in age limit will remain same.
